Frequently Asked Questions

What is a commercial invoice used for?

It is the document customs authorities use to assess duty and clear a shipment, and the basis on which the importer pays. It is not the same as a tax invoice: its job is to describe and value the goods for customs, which is why HS codes, country of origin and Incoterms matter more here than tax registration numbers.

Why do HS codes and Incoterms matter on an export invoice?

The HS code determines the duty rate applied, and the Incoterm determines who bears freight, insurance and duty. Getting either wrong causes clearance delays and unexpected charges landing on whichever party the term did not actually assign them to.
