Why do I need rent receipts?
Rent receipts are required to claim HRA (House Rent Allowance) exemption under Section 10(13A) of the Income Tax Act. Your employer may ask for them as proof of rent payment.
Is landlord PAN required on rent receipt?
Yes, if annual rent exceeds Rs. 1,00,000, the landlord's PAN is mandatory. Without it, HRA exemption may be denied.
Do rent receipts need a revenue stamp?
For cash payments exceeding Rs. 5,000, a revenue stamp of Re. 1 is technically required on the receipt. Digital payments do not require a revenue stamp.
