Multi-Currency Accounting UAE: AED, USD, EUR | HelloBooks Run AED, USD and EUR bank accounts, customers and suppliers in one ledger, with FX gains and losses posted for you and reports in dirhams.

Use case · Multi-currency

Multi-currency accounting UAE traders can run in one ledger

A Dubai trading company might buy in euros, sell in dollars, pay rent in dirhams and hold savings in sterling. Keeping a separate spreadsheet for each currency hides the real profit. HelloBooks keeps every account and contact in its own currency, reports everything in AED, and posts the exchange gains and losses that appear when rates move between invoice and payment.

How the HelloBooks AI agent handles it

You ask in plain English, the AI does the bookkeeping work, and you or your accountant approve the result.

  • You ask: “How much did currency movements cost or earn us last quarter?”
  • The AI agent: The agent totals realised FX gains and losses on settled invoices and bills, adds the unrealised movement on open balances and foreign bank accounts at the period-end rate, and explains the biggest items.
  • You review: Your accountant checks the period-end rates used for revaluation and approves the revaluation entry before the period is locked.

How the ledger handles currencies

Your base currency is AED. Each bank account, customer and supplier has its own currency. An invoice to a German buyer is raised in EUR, recorded in EUR on the customer, and converted to AED at the rate on the invoice date for your reports. When the payment arrives, the difference between the invoice-date and payment-date rates becomes a realised gain or loss.

For VAT, invoices in another currency must still show the VAT in AED and the rate applied, under Article 59 of the Executive Regulation. HelloBooks prints both automatically.

  • AED, USD, EUR, GBP, INR and other currencies
  • Realised gains and losses posted on settlement
  • Unrealised revaluation at period end
  • Reports in AED, with drill-down to original currency

Worked example: a Dubai coffee importer

A coffee importer buys beans from an Italian roaster for EUR 40,000 when the rate is 4.00, so the bill is AED 160,000. It pays six weeks later when the rate is 4.06 and the payment costs AED 162,400. HelloBooks posts a AED 2,400 realised FX loss. At the same time, a USD 25,000 invoice to a café chain in Bahrain is still open at quarter end; the agent revalues it at the closing rate and shows the unrealised movement separately.

Rates you can trust

Every foreign currency entry stores the rate used, and you can enter the rate your bank actually applied. Many UAE businesses prefer to use the bank rate for settlements and a published rate for revaluation; your accountant can set that policy once.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I hold a foreign currency bank account in HelloBooks?
Yes. Create the account in its currency and upload statements in that currency. The balance is shown in both the account currency and AED.
Do FX gains and losses affect corporate tax?
They form part of accounting profit, which is the starting point for corporate tax. How they are treated in your computation is a question for your tax agent.
Can I invoice in a currency not on the default list?
Many currencies are available. If you need one that is missing, email hello@hellobooks.ai and we will look at adding it.
