How US sales tax is calculated
Sales tax is set by states, and many counties, cities and special districts add their own rate on top. The combined rate for a sale is the state rate plus every local rate that applies at the delivery address. Tax = price x combined rate. To find the tax inside a total that already includes it, divide the total by (1 + rate) to get the pre-tax price.
Rates change during the year and differ street by street, so always confirm the rate on the state revenue department website before you file.
