Even split, or by-item assignment
Up to six tabs, even split or per-item assignment, child bills linked to the parent. Built for restaurants, group dinners, and any retail where customers want separate receipts.
Part of HelloBooks POS · Operations
Splitting a bill is one of those features that looks simple and hides edge cases — even-split with rounding, by-item with shared dishes, separate tenders per tab. HelloBooks handles all three cleanly, and the books see a single dining session split into linked child bills.
Every detail, dialled in
Built for the till, validated against the canonical accounting engine — so every POS sale closes the books cleanly.
Up to six tabs
A parent bill can split into up to six child bills, each with its own customer (optional), tender, and receipt. The tabs lock once any tab is settled — preventing post-settle re-allocation.
- Up to six child bills
- Per-tab customer (optional)
- Per-tab tender
- Locks on first settle
Even or by-item
Even-split divides the parent total equally with rounding handled at the engine level. By-item lets the cashier drag lines onto specific tabs (and shared lines split proportionally).
- Even-split with rounding
- Per-line assignment
- Shared-line proration
- Drag-and-drop UX
Child bills linked to parent
Each child bill carries a parentBillId and a sessionId. Returns and exchanges trace back to the right child; analytics roll up to the parent for true session-level insight.
- Parent → child link
- Session-level analytics
- Return at child level
- Audit trail unified
Why teams move off legacy tills
- Cashier creates separate bills manually
- No parent linkage
- Even-split rounding handled in head
- Returns confused
- Atomic split with parent link
- Even-split + by-item native
- Returns trace correctly
- Session analytics intact
Questions, answered
Can different tabs use different tenders?
Yes. Tab 1 cash, Tab 2 card, Tab 3 UPI — totally fine. Each tab settles independently.
What if a customer arrives or leaves mid-meal?
Tabs can be added or removed before settle. Once any tab settles, the split locks.
How is GST handled across tabs?
GST follows the lines on each tab. If a 100 ₹ line splits 50/50 across two tabs, each tab carries the proportional GST.
Does this work for retail (not restaurants)?
Yes. Two friends shopping together, each paying for their own items — same flow.
