Sage’s advantages in Ireland

Sage prices in euro, sells an Irish payroll add-on in the same account, and has decades of relationships with Irish practices. If you employ staff and want accounts and payroll from one vendor on one invoice, Sage can do that and HelloBooks cannot today.

Many accountants trained on Sage products and are comfortable reviewing Sage ledgers. That trust is worth something when you rely on your accountant for year-end accounts and tax returns.

Where HelloBooks pulls ahead

Sage’s Start plan is single-user, so an owner who wants a bookkeeper or a partner in the system has to move up a tier. HelloBooks lets a small team share the Free plan, allows up to five users on Starter and has no user cap on Pro.

Sage keeps receipt capture and multi-currency for its upper plan. HelloBooks reads receipts and supplier bills with AI from the phone app, using AI credits that come with every plan, and adds multi-currency on Pro. Its AI also proposes the account and Irish VAT rate for every bank line, which is the slowest part of bookkeeping for most owners.

Irish VAT in practice

Both products work out the VAT return from coded transactions, and neither files it through a direct link: you finish the job in ROS. The quality of the VAT3 therefore depends on how well each line is coded. In HelloBooks the rate is proposed at the moment the transaction arrives and confirmed by a person, so the 23%, 13.5%, 9% and 0% totals build up through the period instead of being fixed at the deadline.

Payroll while HelloBooks has none

If you employ people and choose HelloBooks, run payroll in a dedicated Irish payroll product and post the wages, PAYE, USC and PRSI totals to the ledger after each pay run. A direct payroll journal import is coming soon. Firms with a handful of staff often find this an acceptable trade for the time saved on the rest of the bookkeeping.

Choosing between them

Pick Sage Accounting if euro billing and an Irish payroll add-on from the same vendor matter most. Pick HelloBooks if you want AI to take over data entry, need more than one user without paying for a top plan, or want to try the product free before committing. Ask your accountant which ledger they review fastest; their time is part of your cost.
