Chapter Guide▾

"Our accountant only knows Tally." If we had a rupee for every time we've heard that, we'd have a decent Diwali bonus. And it's a perfectly good reason to stay. TallyPrime is a solid choice when your accountant lives in it and you're happy paying for a rental or licence. Cloud GST software makes more sense when you want to see your books from anywhere, share them with a CA without sending backup files, and start at ₹0. As of Sep 2026, TallyPrime is available on paid rental or licence (from about ₹750/month plus GST) and has connected GST filing in recent releases.

We make HelloBooks, a cloud product, so weigh our view accordingly. We'll be clear about where Tally is the better fit.

Why has Tally lasted so long?

Because a whole generation of Indian accountants learnt their trade on it. Ask any CA's office or any trading firm's back room and you'll find someone who can pass a voucher in Tally faster than you can say "journal entry". That familiarity is worth a lot. Training, hiring and handing over books are all easier when everyone speaks the same software.

As of Sep 2026, TallyPrime also has connected GST filing in recent releases, so "Tally can't file" isn't a fair complaint if you're on a current version. If your Tally is several years old, check which release you have.

What does cloud software change?

Mostly, where the books live and who can reach them.

With cloud software, the books sit online. You log in from the shop, from home, from your phone at a wedding. Your CA logs in from their office with their own user. There's no "send me the backup" on the 8th and no wondering which copy is the latest. Updates arrive without anyone reinstalling anything.

The trade-off is that you depend on an internet connection and on the vendor. On a day the internet's down at your office, you're waiting, or using your phone's hotspot.

What about Busy, and other paid tools?

Busy is the other name that comes up with traders. As of Sep 2026, Busy's GST tier costs about ₹8,000 per 360 days. Like Tally, it's a paid tool, and it suits businesses already trained on it and comfortable with an annual cost. If you're deciding between paid options, compare them on what your accountant knows and what your volume needs, not just on headline price.

Who should stay on Tally?

Stay on Tally if your accountant or CA works fastest in it and doesn't want to change. Stay if you've years of history in Tally and a reporting setup that works for you. Stay if the rental or licence cost isn't a concern and you're on a release with connected GST filing. Honestly, switching software for its own sake isn't worth the disruption. If Tally's working, that's a fine place to be.

Who should look at cloud?

Look at cloud software if you want to check sales, payables or your GST position without being at the office computer. Or if you and your CA keep passing backup files back and forth and losing track of which is current. Or if you're a newer or smaller business that doesn't want a monthly rental just to file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B.

Here's one example. Fatima started a small skincare brand in Kochi in Apr 2026. Around 90 transactions in her first six months, one GSTIN, a CA who reviews quarterly. Paying for software from day one would be a stretch for her. A free cloud plan files her returns, and her CA logs in when it's time to review.

Now the other side. Gopal runs a 20-year-old wholesale business in Ludhiana. His accountant has used Tally since the early versions, there's a decade of data in it, and he's on a current release. Moving him to cloud just to save a rental fee would cost more in disruption than it saves. Tally is the right answer for Gopal.

(Fatima and Gopal are illustrations, not customers.)

Can you have both?

Yes, and this is often the most practical answer for growing businesses. Do day-to-day invoicing and GST filing in cloud software and keep Tally for the accountant who prefers it, using a sync if your cloud tool offers one. Or keep Tally as the main ledger and use a cloud tool only for invoicing on the go. The thing to avoid is two systems that each think they're the main one. Decide which is the source of truth for GST returns, and file only from that one.

If you're moving from Tally to cloud

Pick the start of a quarter. Export masters from Tally (ledgers, parties with GSTINs, stock items with HSN/SAC) and import them. Bring opening balances as on the start date. Run one month in parallel and compare the GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B summaries. Keep your Tally data archived and readable, because you'll need it for assessments and the annual return for earlier years. If you're mid-way through a GSTR-9 or have open notices, get your CA's advice before moving.
