Simplified tax invoice UAE: the AED 10,000 rule and the fields you still need

A simplified tax invoice is the shorter document that suits cafés, shops and small service jobs. You can use it when the customer is not VAT registered, or when a registered customer's purchase does not exceed AED 10,000. It still needs your TRN and the VAT in AED. It is never allowed where the reverse charge applies. This guide sets out exactly what the Executive Regulation permits.

How the HelloBooks AI agent handles it

You ask in plain English, the AI does the bookkeeping work, and you or your accountant approve the result.

  • You ask: “Set our counter receipts to simplified invoices but keep full invoices for trade customers over 10,000 dirhams.”
  • The AI agent: HelloBooks applies the simplified template to walk-in sales and to registered customers up to AED 10,000, and switches to the full template automatically when a registered customer’s invoice goes over that limit.
  • You review: You confirm the template rules and spot-check a few invoices before they go to customers.

When a simplified invoice is allowed

Article 59(5) of the Executive Regulation permits a simplified tax invoice in two cases. The first is where the recipient is not a registrant. The second is where the recipient is a registrant and the consideration for the supply does not exceed AED 10,000. The simplified invoice cannot be used where the reverse charge under Article 48 of the Decree-Law applies.

A Deira electronics shop selling a AED 1,890 laptop to a walk-in customer can issue one. The same shop selling AED 14,700 of laptops to a registered company must issue a full tax invoice with the customer's TRN.

What a simplified invoice must show

Article 59(2) lists the shorter set of details. Compared with the full invoice, it drops the recipient's details and the line-by-line breakdown of unit price, quantity and tax.

  • The words Tax Invoice
  • Supplier name, address and TRN
  • Date of issue
  • Description of the goods or services supplied
  • Total consideration and the tax amount in AED

Watch-outs

Your registered customers cannot always rely on a simplified document. A trade customer buying AED 9,500 today and AED 9,500 tomorrow gets two simplified invoices, each under the limit. Splitting a single supply to stay under AED 10,000 is a different matter and is best avoided.

Where electronic invoicing is required or used voluntarily, Article 59(16) disapplies several clauses, including the simplified invoice provision in Article 59(2). As the e-invoicing phases begin in 2027 for B2B transactions, check with your tax agent how simplified invoices fit your flows.

Running both formats in HelloBooks

HelloBooks holds a full tax invoice template and a simplified one, and the AI agent picks between them based on whether the customer has a TRN and the invoice total. Every invoice, whatever the template, posts the same line-level VAT to the ledger, so the return figures are identical either way. Retail businesses wanting the receipt layout adjusted to their printer or bilingual branding can email hello@hellobooks.ai.
