Tax credit note UAE: when to issue one and what it must show

When a sale changes after the invoice has gone out, because goods come back, a price is cut or the job is cancelled, the VAT you reported has to change with it. In the UAE that adjustment is made through a tax credit note, which has its own required contents and a 14-day deadline. This guide covers the triggers, the format and how the adjustment lands in your return.

How the HelloBooks AI agent handles it

You ask in plain English, the AI does the bookkeeping work, and you or your accountant approve the result.

  • You ask: “Create a credit note for invoice 1042; the customer returned 3 of the 10 chairs.”
  • The AI agent: HelloBooks drafts a tax credit note referencing invoice 1042, reduces the value by three chairs, shows the VAT difference in AED and a short reason, and reverses the output VAT in the ledger once approved.
  • You review: You confirm the quantity and reason, approve the note and send it to the customer within the deadline.

When a credit note is required

Article 61(1) of Federal Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017 lists events that require output tax to be adjusted, including cancellation of the supply and goods being returned. Where those events mean output tax was overstated, Article 62(2) requires a tax credit note within 14 days of the event. Article 70(1) requires an original tax credit note to be delivered to the recipient.

If the event means tax was understated instead, Article 62(1) requires a new tax invoice.

What the credit note must show

Article 60(1) of the Executive Regulation sets the contents. Make sure the original invoice can be identified from the note, because that is how both you and the customer match the adjustment.

  • The words Tax Credit Note
  • Supplier name, address and TRN
  • Recipient TRN, where the recipient is registered
  • Date of issue
  • Value of the supply as shown on the original invoice, the correct value, and the difference
  • The VAT on that difference, in AED
  • A brief explanation of the reason
  • Information identifying the original supply

A worked example

A furniture supplier in Ajman invoices a hotel AED 50,000 plus AED 2,500 VAT for 10 sets of chairs. Three sets are returned damaged on 12 August. The supplier issues a tax credit note by 26 August for AED 15,000 plus AED 750 VAT. Its output tax for the period falls by AED 750, and the hotel reduces its input tax by the same amount.

The amended penalty table sets AED 2,500 for each detected case of failing to issue a tax credit note, the same as for a missing tax invoice.

Credit notes in HelloBooks

Credit notes are raised from the original invoice, so the reference, customer TRN and VAT treatment carry over automatically. The AI agent can draft one from a short instruction and shows the 14-day deadline on the draft. Approved notes reduce output VAT in the period they are issued and appear on the customer's statement, keeping receivables and VAT in step.
