QuickBooks alternative UAE: HelloBooks vs QuickBooks Online

QuickBooks Online is one of the best-known small business ledgers, and it sells in the UAE with the 5% VAT rate preset. HelloBooks is built around an AI agent that does the posting and matching while you approve. Both will run the books of a Dubai consultancy or an Ajman workshop. The differences show up in how much AI help you get when you invoice in more than one currency, how Arabic supplier bills are handled, and how the VAT 201 figures reach your accountant.

How the HelloBooks AI agent handles it

You ask in plain English, the AI does the bookkeeping work, and you or your accountant approve the result.

  • You ask: “Post this month’s USD and AED supplier bills and tell me the VAT I can reclaim.”
  • The AI agent: HelloBooks reads each bill, posts it in its original currency with the AED equivalent, applies the VAT treatment line by line and totals reclaimable input tax, keeping FX differences in their own account.
  • You review: The owner or bookkeeper checks the flagged bills, such as a foreign service that may need reverse charge, and approves the batch before the quarter’s return is prepared.

What QuickBooks says it offers in the UAE

QuickBooks’ UAE VAT page says the product comes pre-filled with the 5% UAE rate, calculates VAT on invoices, expenses and purchase orders, and produces a tax summary to help you prepare for submitting returns to the Federal Tax Authority. It also mentions attaching receipt photos and a dashboard showing VAT owed.

Its UAE home page describes AI under the Intuit Intelligence and Intuit Assist names, with agents that categorise transactions and flag inconsistencies. The same page states that AI outputs are currently in English only, and that its finance AI is not available to customers with multicurrency enabled. It lists hundreds of integrations, including Dext and PayPal, and an accountant edition called QuickBooks Online Accountant.

How HelloBooks handles the same work

Multi-currency and AI work together in HelloBooks. A Dubai marketing agency billing a London client in GBP and paying a Mumbai freelancer in INR keeps both in their own currency, with the AED value, VAT treatment and FX gain or loss posted by the agent. That combination matters in the UAE, where many small firms trade in three or four currencies.

The agent also reads supplier bills and receipts written in Arabic, English or both, which is common for local suppliers in Sharjah and Abu Dhabi. It proposes the account and VAT code for each line; you accept or correct it, and it learns your choices. The VAT 201 return is then prepared from the ledger for you or your accountant to review and file on EmaraTax.

One honest limit: HelloBooks does not offer live feeds from UAE banks. You upload Emirates NBD, ADCB, FAB or other statements as PDF, CSV or Excel, and the AI matches each line. If you want custom invoice layouts or AI categorisation rules set up, book a call at /book-a-demo.

Choosing between them

QuickBooks is a sensible choice if your accountant already works in QuickBooks Online Accountant, if you depend on an app from its marketplace, or if you bill only in AED and want a familiar, widely documented product.

HelloBooks suits owners who want the AI to carry the bookkeeping even when invoices and bills are in several currencies, who receive many Arabic-language bills, and who would rather ask “how much input VAT do we have this quarter?” than build a report. A worked example: a Business Bay trading firm with AED 1.8 million revenue and 40 USD bills a month gets those bills posted, converted and VAT-coded by the agent, with only exceptions left for a person.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is QuickBooks Online available in the UAE?
Yes. Intuit runs a UAE site for QuickBooks Online with VAT tracking at the 5% rate preset, according to its own pages read in October 2026.
Do HelloBooks AI features work with multi-currency?
Yes. The agent captures, posts and matches foreign-currency transactions, and FX gains and losses are tracked. QuickBooks’ UAE page notes its finance AI is not available when multicurrency is enabled, so check that point if you trade in several currencies.
Can I move my QuickBooks data to HelloBooks?
Export your chart of accounts, customers, suppliers, open invoices, open bills and a trial balance at your switch date. HelloBooks loads these as opening balances, and our team can map your chart of accounts during onboarding.
Does either product file VAT with the FTA automatically?
QuickBooks describes helping you prepare returns for the FTA. HelloBooks prepares the VAT 201 figures from the ledger. In both cases a person reviews the numbers and submits the return on EmaraTax.
