Cash drawer opening at a retail counter

Sounds trivial, but every retailer who has lived without it knows the cost: cashiers leave the drawer ajar because re-opening is annoying, theft windows widen, and shift close becomes a guessing game. HelloBooks makes drawer kicks automatic and audited.

HOW IT WORKS

Every detail, dialled in

Built for the till, validated against the canonical accounting engine — so every POS sale closes the books cleanly.

🔓

Auto-kick on cash and split-cash settle

When a settle includes cash, the kick-out command fires through the configured printer immediately after the receipt prints. The cashier does not need to remember a shortcut, and the audit trail records the open event.

  • Triggered on any cash component of a tender
  • Works with split bills (kicks once per tender)
  • Drawer-open event logged
  • Disable per outlet for cashless-only stores
🛡️

Manual override with audit

A manager can open the drawer mid-shift for a cash drop, a refund, or to make change. Every manual open requires a passcode and a reason; both are saved to the shift’s audit log.

  • Manager-passcode-protected manual open
  • Reason mandatory (drop, refund, change)
  • Logs cashier + manager + timestamp
  • Visible in the shift Z-report
🔌

Brand-agnostic

We send the kick command through the printer’s standard port, so the drawer brand does not matter. APG Vasario, Epson DK, POSIFLEX, TVS, Olivetti — wire it up once and forget about it.

  • Standard ESC/POS kick command
  • RJ-11 / RJ-12 cabling supported
  • Per-printer voltage selection (12V / 24V)
  • Tested across 20+ drawer SKUs

FAQ

Questions, answered

Do I need a special drawer to make this work?

No. Any drawer with the standard RJ-11 or RJ-12 kick port wires into your existing ESC/POS thermal printer. The printer fires the kick command on the till’s instruction.

What about a cashless outlet?

Disable the auto-kick at the outlet level. The integration is opt-in per location.

Can a manager open the drawer mid-shift?

Yes — with a passcode and a reason. The open event lands in the shift Z-report so the close-of-day count can reconcile.

Which printer brands carry the kick command reliably?

Epson TM-T, TVS RP, Bixolon SRP, POSIFLEX PP, Star TSP — all tested. Generic ESC/POS printers usually work too if the kick port is wired.
