How the calculation works

The calculator follows these steps from the IRS form or worksheet, in order.

  1. Standard side: the base amount for the year and filing status, plus the add-on for each age 65+ or blindness box.
  2. Add-on per box: $1,600 for 2025 and $1,650 for 2026; $2,000 and $2,050 if unmarried and not a surviving spouse.
  3. 2026 only: add cash gifts to charity up to $1,000 ($2,000 joint), which non-itemizers can deduct.
  4. Itemized side: SALT after the limit, mortgage interest, charitable gifts, medical costs above 7.5% of AGI, and other itemized amounts.
  5. For 2026 above the SALT threshold, itemized deductions are shown as a range between the floor and the cap.

What the comparison leaves out

It does not apply the percentage-of-AGI limits on charitable gifts, the 2026 limit on the benefit of itemizing for clients in the top bracket, or any other 2026 change to charitable deductions for itemizers. Treat a close result as a reason to run both on the return.

The new Schedule 1-A deductions are available either way, so they do not affect the choice.

Clients worth re-testing this season

  • Homeowners in high-tax states who took the standard deduction under the old $10,000 SALT cap.
  • Retirees with large medical bills relative to AGI.
  • Clients who give regularly in cash and may get some benefit in 2026 without itemizing.
  • Married couples comparing joint and separate returns, since the SALT limit halves for separate filers.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which standard deduction amounts does it use?
For 2025: $15,750 single, $31,500 joint, $23,625 head of household. For 2026: $16,100, $32,200 and $24,150.
Can a dependent use it?
Not reliably. A dependent’s standard deduction is limited by a separate rule that this calculator does not apply.
