What is different about the 2027 season

In 2027 January 31 falls on a Sunday, so W-2s and 1099-NEC forms move to Monday, February 1. March 15 is a Monday, so partnership and S corporation returns are due on the day itself.

Forms 1099 issued in early 2027 report 2026 payments, which are the first ones subject to the $2,000 threshold for nonemployee compensation. Expect fewer forms from small business clients, and more questions about why.

Planning the season from these dates

Use the March 15 date to set the latest day you will accept business books for an on-time return. Anything after that goes to the extension list automatically, with the client told in writing.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why is this based on a draft?
The IRS posts a draft of Publication 509 before the final. The page will be updated when the final 2027 publication appears; dates rarely change, but treat them as provisional until then.
When is the fourth 2027 estimated payment due?
It falls in January 2028, which the 2027 calendar does not cover. It will be added from the 2028 publication.
