Form and box
Form 1099-NEC, box 1
Threshold for 2026
$2,000 or more

The total is under the 2026 threshold. Card and payment-app payments are reported on Form 1099-K instead. Not advice on a specific payment.

How the calculation works

The calculator follows these steps from the IRS form or worksheet, in order.

  1. Payments made in 2025: nonemployee compensation, rents and other income are reported at $600 or more.
  2. Payments made in 2026: the same boxes are reported at $2,000 or more.
  3. Royalties: $10 or more in both years. Gross proceeds paid to an attorney: $600 or more in both years.
  4. Payments to a corporation are generally not reported, but the exemption does not apply to payments for legal services.

Totals are per payee for the year

Add up everything paid to the same payee in the calendar year for the same type of payment before comparing to the threshold. A contractor paid in several small invoices can still cross it.

Payments made by credit card or through a payment app are generally reported by the card issuer or platform on Form 1099-K, so leave those out of the 1099-NEC total.

The first year the new threshold shows up

The higher threshold applies to payments made in 2026, so the first forms it affects are the ones furnished in early 2027. The forms going out for 2025 payments still use the old threshold.
