State 1099-K thresholds that differ from federal

Payment apps only owe a federal 1099-K above $20,000 and 200 transactions. Some states still want the form at much lower amounts, so clients may get a state copy without a federal one.

States we verified

  • Virginia: a TPSO that paid $600 or more to a Virginia payee, or a payee with a Virginia mailing address, must also file the 1099-K with Virginia Tax. Due March 31 if filed on paper with the IRS, April 30 if filed electronically.
  • Wisconsin: the threshold for certain Forms 1099 filed with the DOR remains $600; matching the federal change would need a state law change.
  • Utah: from 2026, payment processors must send Utah the same 1099-K information they report to the IRS.

A state we could not confirm

Vermont’s 2017 law set a lower 1099-K threshold, but the department’s current 1099-K notices page gives a different figure. We left Vermont out until the department’s pages agree.

What to do with client books

A 1099-K is a gross figure. Reconcile it to deposits and sales in the books before the return, so refunds, fees and personal transfers are not taxed twice. HelloBooks bank feeds and AI categorisation with a review queue make that reconciliation a report rather than a spreadsheet.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does a state 1099-K mean the client owes more tax?
No. The form reports gross payments; the taxable amount still comes from the client’s records.
