Form 1099-K Threshold Back to $20,000 and 200 | HelloBooks Payment apps and marketplaces report only above $20,000 and 200 transactions again. What it means for ecommerce and gig clients.

Information returns · Form 1099-K

Form 1099-K is back to $20,000 and 200 transactions

The lower 1099-K thresholds that had been phasing in are gone. Most small sellers and gig workers will not get a 1099-K, but the income is still taxable, so your intake cannot rely on the form.

What changed

A payment settlement entity has to file a 1099-K only when a payee’s gross payments exceed $20,000 and the number of transactions exceeds 200 in the year. The law reinstated this threshold retroactively, replacing the lower amounts that had been phasing in.

Why it matters for ecommerce and gig clients

Clients who sell online or work through apps may now receive no 1099-K at all. That changes nothing about what they owe, but it removes a document your team may have used to check gross receipts. Reconcile sales from the platform payout reports and the bank deposits instead.

Where a client does get a 1099-K, remember it reports gross payments. Refunds, platform fees and personal transfers still have to be backed out from the books.

Reconciling platform income

With bank feeds in HelloBooks, each platform payout arrives as a deposit the AI can match and categorise, and fees can be split out at the same time. That gives you a gross-to-net bridge whether or not a 1099-K exists.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do clients under the threshold still report the income?
Yes. The threshold decides whether the platform files a form, not whether the income is taxable.
