New Hampshire’s Interest and Dividends Tax is gone for 2025

For most New Hampshire clients the only personal state return they ever filed was the I&D return. That return does not exist for 2025, but the old years are still open.

What changed

The Department of Revenue Administration says the tax is repealed for taxable periods beginning after December 31, 2024, earlier than the original phase-out schedule. The last rate, for periods ending on or after December 31, 2024, was 3%.

What clients still owe

A 2024 I&D return, or any earlier year’s return that has not been filed, is still required. Periods that started on or before December 31, 2024 also stay open to audit and collection, so keep the workpapers.

Do not send 2025 estimated I&D payments. A client who paid them in error has to ask the department for a refund in writing.

  • Remove the I&D return from your 2025 engagement letters.
  • Check prior-year client files for unfiled I&D years before closing them out.
  • Watch for clients still scheduling estimate payments out of habit.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is a New Hampshire I&D return due for 2025?
No. The tax does not apply to taxable periods beginning on or after January 1, 2025.
Did the Business Profits Tax or Business Enterprise Tax change?
The repeal release does not mention either business tax, so treat them as unchanged unless the department publishes otherwise.
