What changed

  • Box 1c (new): total cash tips included in box 1a.
  • Box 1d (new): up to two Treasury tipped occupation codes, with “000” if tips came from a nonqualifying occupation.
  • Filer and payee addresses split into separate boxes.
  • The de minimis rule for third party network transactions is stated as payments over $20,000 and more than 200 transactions.

Why it matters for tipped self-employed clients

Rideshare drivers, delivery workers and others paid through apps may see tips on a 1099-K for the first time. The box 1c figure is a starting point for the Schedule 1-A tips deduction, but it only covers tips that went through the platform.

In HelloBooks, platform payouts arrive through bank feeds and can be split into fares, tips and fees as they are categorised, so you can reconcile the 1099-K to the books, or rebuild the figures when no 1099-K is issued.
