UK migration runbook

  1. 1

    Export from Sage

Sage 50: File → Export → CSV bundle (Customers, Suppliers, Products, Nominal, Transactions). Sage Business Cloud: Settings → Manage Data → Export. The export takes 5-20 minutes for a typical SMB workspace and includes VAT codes.

  2. 2

    Import into HelloBooks

Settings → Import → Sage. Upload the CSV bundle. The mapping screen lets you align Sage nominal codes (e.g. 4000 Sales, 7000 Salaries) to the HelloBooks chart before commit. Auto-runs in 5-15 minutes.

  3. 3

Verify trial balance + VAT return

Open Reports → Trial Balance and confirm totals match Sage closing balances. Open VAT → Submission Preview and confirm the next return period boxes match what Sage was showing — including FRS percentage if applicable.

  4. 4

    Connect UK bank feeds

Settings → Bank → Add. Sign in via Plaid / Yapily for Barclays, Lloyds, HSBC, NatWest, Santander, Monzo, Starling, Revolut. HelloBooks pulls 24 months of history and runs AI categorisation against the imported chart.

  5. 5

Keep your current MTD filing route

Filing VAT returns to HMRC from HelloBooks is coming soon. Until then, keep your existing MTD connection in Sage for submission, and use HelloBooks to prepare and check the boxes 1 to 9 figures. Join the waitlist on the UK VAT page to hear when filing is ready.

  6. 6

    Move CIS subcontractors over

Subcontractors marked CIS in Sage come across with verification status and YTD CIS deduction totals. HelloBooks files the monthly CIS300 return direct to HMRC — included on Pro, no add-on.
