What is TRN in UAE? The Tax Registration Number explained

TRN stands for Tax Registration Number. It is the unique number the Federal Tax Authority gives a business when its VAT registration is approved, and it identifies that business in every return, payment and tax invoice. Your customers need your TRN on their invoices to recover the VAT they pay you, and you need your suppliers' TRNs for the same reason.

Definition

A TRN is issued once per registered person. Article 14(3) of Federal Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017 says a person conducting business may not hold more than one Tax Registration Number, so a company with branches in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah registers once and uses the same TRN everywhere. A tax group also has one TRN for all its members.

The number appears on your registration certificate in EmaraTax, the FTA's online portal, which you reach through UAE Pass.

Why it matters to a UAE business

Article 59(1) of the Executive Regulation requires a full tax invoice to show the supplier's TRN, and the recipient's TRN where the recipient is registered. A simplified tax invoice also needs the supplier's TRN. Without a valid TRN on the invoice, your customer may struggle to recover input VAT, and the FTA's business visitor refund page warns that invoices with an incorrect TRN will be rejected.

Checking supplier TRNs protects you too. A bill showing VAT but no TRN, or a TRN that does not match the supplier, is a red flag: either the supplier is not registered and should not be charging VAT, or the details are wrong.

How HelloBooks handles TRNs

You enter your own TRN once and every tax invoice and credit note HelloBooks drafts carries it. Customer and supplier records hold their TRNs, and the AI agent reads the TRN from incoming bills in Arabic or English when it captures them. If a registered customer has no TRN on file, HelloBooks warns you before the invoice is sent. If a supplier bill shows VAT without a TRN, the agent holds the input VAT back and asks you to check.

Firms managing many clients can request supplier-TRN exception reports or approval rules suited to their review process by booking a call at /book-a-demo.
