Dubai Design District company accounting for studios, labels and freelancers

Dubai Design District, or d3, is a TECOM Group community positioned as the region's hub for design, fashion and culture. It houses global and local brands in art, design and fashion, and offers a freelance licence through its GoFreelance route. Its businesses earn in two very different ways: project fees from developers and brands, and retail sales to shoppers. Each is treated differently under the free zone tax rules.

Design studios and project fees

An interior design studio in d3 bills a hotel developer in stages: concept, design development, documentation and site supervision. Each stage is invoiced on approval, and procurement of furniture is sometimes billed through at cost plus a fee. HelloBooks tags every invoice and bill to the project, so the studio sees fee margin and procurement margin separately.

The AI agent reads supplier quotations and invoices, including Arabic ones from local joinery workshops, and attaches them to the project. Ask "which projects are over budget on consultants this year?" and it lists them with the bills behind each one.

Fashion labels with a boutique

A d3 fashion label might sell wholesale to department stores in the Gulf and run its own boutique selling to shoppers. The boutique income comes from natural persons, which the FTA guide normally treats as excluded activities. Wholesale to other free zone persons, or distribution that meets the conditions in Ministerial Decision No. 265 of 2023, may be qualifying.

Worked through: a label with AED 2.6 million of revenue, AED 380,000 of it from the boutique. The de minimis cap is AED 130,000, so the boutique alone puts the company over it. The label would be taxed at the regular rates, and with revenue under AED 3 million it could consider small business relief, which a qualifying free zone person cannot.

  • Stock by item and size, with multi-warehouse tracking on the Business plan
  • Daily boutique takings posted as a summary entry; no POS integration
  • Wholesale and retail income kept in separate accounts

Freelancers in d3

Freelancers on a d3 permit need simpler books: invoices, expenses and a clear view of what is owed. HelloBooks drafts invoices from a short description, sends payment reminders by email or WhatsApp, and keeps receipts attached to each expense. Whether a freelancer needs to register for corporate tax depends on how the licence is held and the turnover, so check with the FTA.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does boutique income affect a d3 company's free zone tax status?
Yes. Retail sales to shoppers are normally excluded activities and count as non-qualifying revenue. If they exceed the de minimis cap, the company is not a qualifying free zone person.
Can HelloBooks track furniture procurement on a design project?
Yes. Supplier bills and client recharges are tagged to the project, so procurement margin and design fees are reported separately.
Is small business relief open to d3 companies?
To those that are not qualifying free zone persons and have revenue of AED 3 million or less. A d3 company that qualifies for the 0% rate gives up the relief.
