How to account for salon staff commissions and tips in the UAE

Salons and spas in the UAE pay many therapists and stylists a basic salary plus commission on services and retail products. Customers add tips, increasingly on card. Packages are sold in advance and redeemed over months. Each of these flows has its own accounting, and getting them wrong means overpaying commission, misstating VAT or holding tips that belong to staff. Here is how to set it up.

Choose a commission basis and write it down

Common bases are a percentage of service revenue excluding VAT, a percentage above a monthly target, or a fixed amount per treatment. Whichever you choose, define it on net revenue after discounts and excluding VAT, and say whether package redemptions count at the redemption value or the price paid. Ambiguity here causes most staff disputes.

Worked example: a therapist earns 10% of service revenue above AED 8,000 of monthly net sales. In October she performs AED 14,600 of services, net of VAT. Commission is 10% of AED 6,600, or AED 660.

Retail product commission

Commission on hair and skincare products sold should be based on product revenue, not service revenue, and at a rate that reflects product margin. If a shampoo sells for AED 120 net and costs AED 70, a 10% commission of AED 12 takes almost a quarter of the AED 50 margin. Set product commission rates with the margin in view.

Many salons settle on a lower product rate, perhaps 5%, with a bonus for hitting a monthly retail target. Whatever you choose, run the numbers for your three best-selling products before announcing it, because a rate that looks generous on paper can wipe out the margin on cheaper lines.

Tips on card belong to staff

Cash tips usually go straight to staff and never touch the books. Card tips are different: the customer pays them to the salon’s card terminal, so the money lands in the salon’s bank account. Record them as a liability to staff, not as revenue, and pay them out through payroll or a separate tips payout.

Whether VAT applies to a tip depends on whether it is genuinely voluntary and passed to staff. Treat it consistently and confirm the approach with your tax agent. Keep a tips report from the terminal for each pay period so staff can see what was collected.

Packages and gift vouchers

A customer who buys a ten-session package for AED 2,500 has prepaid. Record the payment as deferred revenue and recognise revenue as each session is redeemed. Commission is normally paid on redemption, when the work is done, not on sale.

VAT timing on prepaid packages and vouchers follows the VAT rules on payments and vouchers, which differ by voucher type. Ask your tax agent how your packages should be treated, and set the till and the books to match.

Running commission through payroll

Commission is pay, and should be processed with salary.

  • Export each staff member’s net service and product sales from the booking system at month end.
  • Calculate commission per the written policy and have a manager check it.
  • Add card tips collected for the period as a separate pay element.
  • Post one payroll journal: salaries, commission, tips payable cleared, and net pay.
  • Keep the calculation sheet attached to the journal.

VAT on salon services

Beauty and hair services are standard-rated at 5%. A salon above AED 375,000 of taxable supplies must register. Product sales are standard-rated too. Make sure your booking system shows prices including VAT to customers and splits VAT correctly in the daily summary that goes into the books.

How HelloBooks supports salons

HelloBooks does not connect to salon booking systems, so the daily sales summary and monthly staff sales come in as journals or imports. The AI agent can set up a recurring daily sales template, track card tips in a staff liability account, and hold package sales as deferred revenue. Payroll through HelloTime calculates pay with commission elements you enter and posts the salary journal to HelloBooks.

Ask “how much in card tips do we owe staff this month?” and get a direct answer. For a commission report by staff member, request a customization at hello@hellobooks.ai.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Should commission be calculated on prices including VAT?
No. Use net revenue excluding VAT, since the VAT belongs to the FTA, not the salon.
Are card tips salon revenue?
Not if they are passed to staff. Record them as owed to staff and pay them out. Confirm the VAT treatment with your tax agent.
When is commission due on package sessions?
Usually when the session is delivered. Paying on sale means paying for work that may never happen if the package is refunded.
