What counts as entertainment
The VAT Executive Regulation blocks input tax on entertainment services provided to people who are not employees, including customers, potential customers, officials, shareholders, owners and investors. Entertainment is defined broadly: hospitality of any kind, including accommodation and food and drink not provided in the normal course of a meeting, access to shows or events, and trips for pleasure or entertainment.
Two phrases carry the weight. 'Hospitality of any kind' catches most client-facing spending. 'In the normal course of a meeting' carves out the coffee, water and modest refreshments you serve during a business meeting in your office.
