How the balance sheet works
A balance sheet is a snapshot on one date: what the business owns (assets), what it owes (liabilities) and what is left for the owners (equity). Assets always equal liabilities plus equity. If the check line is not zero, something is missing or entered twice.
Retained earnings are the profits kept in the business over time; take the figure from your P&L history.
