Frequently asked questions
What is the late fee for GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B?
₹50 per day (₹25 CGST + ₹25 SGST) for a normal return and ₹20 per day (₹10 + ₹10) for a nil return, up to a cap per return that depends on your turnover. The calculator pre-fills these from our GST returns guide; edit them if the notified figures change.
How is interest on late GST payment calculated?
Interest runs at 18% a year under Section 50(1) on the net tax paid in cash after the due date, for each day of delay. Tax set off from input tax credit does not attract this interest.
Is the late fee charged on GSTR-1 as well?
Yes. The GST portal adds the GSTR-1 late fee to your next GSTR-3B. GSTR-1 carries no interest because it reports supplies rather than paying tax.
Can a late fee be waived?
Only when the government notifies an amnesty or waiver. Check the latest notifications on cbic-gst.gov.in before you assume one applies.
