How ESI works
Employees' State Insurance is a contributory health-and-insurance scheme for lower-paid employees. The employee pays 0.75%of wages and the employer 3.25%, a combined 4%, where monthly wages are within the ₹21,000ceiling (₹25,000 for an employee with a disability). It funds medical care, sickness, maternity and disablement benefits. Above the ceiling ESI does not apply, and an employee who crosses it mid-period stays covered to the period's end.

Frequently asked questions
What are the ESI contribution rates?
The employee contributes 0.75% of wages and the employer 3.25%, a combined 4%. ESI applies where monthly wages are within the ₹21,000 ceiling (₹25,000 for an employee with a disability). Above the ceiling, no ESI is due.
Who has to register for ESI?
An establishment with 10 or more employees in most states, though the threshold and establishment type vary by state notification. Registration is with the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), and ESI funds medical care and cash benefits for covered employees.
What happens when an employee's wage crosses the ceiling mid-year?
ESI has two contribution periods a year (April–September and October–March). An employee whose wage rises above the ceiling continues to be covered until the end of the current contribution period, and only then stops.
Is ESI the same as PF?
No. ESI is health and insurance cover run by the ESIC; the provident fund (EPF) is retirement savings run by the EPFO. They have different rates, ceilings and thresholds — see the EPF calculator for the PF side.
