Choosing accounting software

Best accounting software in Ireland (2026): an honest comparison

The best accounting software for an Irish business is the one that gets your VAT3 right, gets your bank activity in without typing, and fits how you pay your people. For most owners that means choosing between Sage, Xero, Big Red Cloud, QuickBooks and HelloBooks. Payroll decides more often than people expect: if you want Irish payroll in the same system today, Sage or Big Red Cloud is simpler. We make HelloBooks, so weigh our view accordingly.

What matters for an Irish business

Five things separate the options in Ireland, and price is only one of them.

  • VAT3 and RTD: the software should code each line with the right Irish rate and build the return from the books. Rates from 1 January 2026 are 23%, 13.5%, 9% and 4.8% for livestock.
  • Payroll: Irish employers report pay to Revenue each time they pay staff, and also report small benefits, travel and subsistence and remote-working allowances.
  • Bank activity: AIB, Bank of Ireland, PTSB and Revolut cover most owners.
  • Billing currency: some vendors bill in euro, some in US dollars.
  • E-invoicing: from November 2028 every business in Ireland must be able to receive structured e-invoices, and a PDF does not count.

Sage Accounting and Sage 50

Sage is the name most Irish accountants grew up with. Sage Accounting comes in an entry plan limited to one user and a fuller plan with unlimited users, quotes, purchase invoice management, receipt capture and multi-currency. Both calculate VAT returns, and Irish payroll is available as a paid add-on. Sage 50, the desktop product many practices still run, adds stock, project costing and multi-company depth at a much higher monthly cost.

Good for businesses with a few staff who want accounts and payroll from one familiar vendor. Watch the single-user limit on the entry plan.

Xero

Xero is popular with accountants and has a large app marketplace. In September 2026 it launched an Irish VAT tool that prepares the VAT3 and RTD from Xero transactions and exports them ready to file in ROS. Its Irish prices are shown in US dollars and rise on 1 November 2026. The entry plan caps invoices and bills, multi-currency is on the top plan only, and there is no built-in Irish payroll.

Good for businesses whose accountant already runs everything in Xero.

Big Red Cloud

Big Red Cloud is Irish-built and leads with local phone support and Irish bank connections to Revolut, Bank of Ireland, AIB and PTSB. It says over 80,000 customers use it, offers integrated Irish payroll, and has an AI assistant called RED that answers questions about your accounting data. It sells one plan with unlimited users and an introductory first-year discount.

Good for owners who want an Irish company, Irish support and payroll in one place.

QuickBooks Online

QuickBooks sells four tiers in Ireland, from a one-user plan to one for 25 users, with automated bank feeds on every plan and multi-currency from the second tier up. When we checked, its Irish pricing page did not describe Irish VAT returns or payroll, so ask before you buy.

HelloBooks

HelloBooks is an AI accountant. Its AI proposes the account and Irish VAT treatment for each transaction, reads bills and receipts, reconciles bank activity and computes the VAT3 figures from the ledger, box by box. Nothing posts until you confirm it. There is a permanent Free plan, and multi-currency for sterling trade is included on Pro.

What it does not do yet: Irish payroll, direct filing to ROS (you enter the totals yourself), and euro billing, which is coming soon. Direct connections to Irish banks are rolling out; statement upload with AI reconciliation works today.

Good for sole traders and small companies who want the bookkeeping done for them and run payroll elsewhere or have no staff.

Which one should you choose?

Start from how you pay people, then from who keeps your books.

  • You employ staff and want one system today: Sage or Big Red Cloud.
  • Your accountant works in Xero: Xero, after checking the November prices.
  • No payroll, or payroll already in BrightPay, Thesaurus or a bureau: try HelloBooks free and measure how much of the bookkeeping the AI takes off you.
