The 2025 instructions say no credit is allowed for new, previously owned or commercial clean vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. For sections 25E, 30D and 45W, a vehicle is acquired on the date a written binding contract is entered into and a payment has been made. A nominal down payment or a trade-in counts as a payment.
A vehicle delivered in October 2025 can still qualify if the contract and payment came first, so ask for the contract rather than the delivery paperwork alone.
