Changes that matter for this client

The child tax credit is $2,200 per child, with up to $1,700 refundable, and the taxpayer or a spouse and the child need valid SSNs. Children born from 2025 through 2028 who are US citizens with an SSN can get a $1,000 federal deposit into a Trump Account.

From 2026, the dependent care credit can reach 50% of expenses and the employer dependent care exclusion is $7,500. The adoption credit is partly refundable, up to $5,120 for 2026.

What to ask the parents

  • Does each child have an SSN, and does at least one parent?
  • Was a child born in 2025 or later, and has Form 4547 been filed?
  • What did you spend on childcare, and how much came through an employer plan?

What to set up

For parents who own a business, keep childcare and family costs out of the business accounts. Employer clients can offer Trump Account contributions of up to $2,500 a year per employee, which belongs in payroll as its own benefit line.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can a family claim both the dependent care FSA and the credit?
Not on the same expenses. Expenses paid with excluded employer benefits reduce those available for the credit.
