Outsourced tax preparation cost: the pricing models

Vendors quote in different units, which makes proposals hard to compare. Put every quote on the same basis, the cost per finished, reviewed return, before you decide.

Compare on cost per reviewed return

A cheap draft that needs an hour of review is not cheap. Track your reviewer’s time on outsourced returns for the first few weeks and add it to the vendor fee; that total is the real unit cost.

  • Vendor fee per return or per hour
  • Your review time on that return
  • Re-work rounds and their turnaround
  • Consent and onboarding effort per client

What you can charge the client

Your own fee is governed by Circular 230. Section 10.27(a) says a practitioner may not charge an unconscionable fee in connection with any matter before the IRS, and 10.27(b) generally bars contingent fees for services in connection with IRS matters, with listed exceptions.

Outsourcing does not change those rules. It changes your margin, which is why the unit-cost exercise above matters.

Reduce what you pay to outsource

The cheapest outsourced hour is the one you no longer need. When client books are kept current in HelloBooks, the provider starts from reconciled figures instead of a stack of statements, and fewer returns fall into the expensive tiers.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why does this page have no prices?
Vendor rates differ widely and change every season. Quoting them would date quickly and could mislead, so we explain the structures and how to compare them.
Can I pass outsourcing cost through as a separate line?
That is a billing choice for your firm. Whatever the presentation, Circular 230 §10.27 applies to the total fee for matters before the IRS.
