How we judged the best accounting software
Most "best accounting software" lists are written by review sites that earn a commission on the tools they rank. We sell one of the tools on this list, so we are not neutral either — the difference is that we say so up front and score every product on the same six criteria instead of on who pays.
A tool earns its place on the shortlist if it does one thing better than everything else here. Nobody wins every category, including us.
- Ledger integrity — a real double-entry general ledger, audit-ready reports, and a period close a lender or tax authority will accept
- How much of the work is done for you — AI categorization, bank reconciliation, bill capture and approvals, versus rules you build yourself
- Price band — what the entry plan costs, what the tier you will actually need costs, and what is gated behind it
- Accountant collaboration — reviewer seats, role-based access, and whether your accountant already knows the tool
- Country and tax coverage — bank feeds, sales tax, VAT or GST, and local filing in the markets you operate in
- Migration — how painful it is to get in, and how painful it is to get out
