Bank feeds for accounting in Ireland: what works in HelloBooks today

HelloBooks connects to banks through Plaid, its open-banking partner, and Ireland is a supported market: AIB, Bank of Ireland, Permanent TSB, An Post Money, Revolut and N26 are among the Irish institutions Plaid covers. Direct connections are rolling out by region and are not yet live for every Irish account. What works for every Irish business today is statement upload, with AI coding each line for you to confirm.

Statement upload, today

Download a statement from your online banking as a PDF or CSV and upload it to HelloBooks. Each line is read, matched against open invoices and bills where possible, and given a proposed account and Irish VAT rate. You review the suggestions, confirm the ones that are right and correct the rest. A month of transactions for a small business usually takes minutes to review.

Direct connections, rolling out

Once a direct connection is available for your bank, transactions arrive on their own each day through Plaid’s open-banking link, using read-only access you authorise with your bank. The coding and review steps stay the same. Check the HelloBooks Ireland page for the current status rather than relying on this page, because rollout happens by region.

Which Irish banks

This is a representative list of Irish institutions in Plaid’s coverage, not a complete one. Any bank that lets you download statements works through upload.

  • AIB (Allied Irish Banks)
  • Bank of Ireland
  • Permanent TSB
  • An Post Money
  • Revolut
  • N26

Card, wallet and payment accounts

Many Irish small businesses run a second account on Revolut Business or a card provider alongside their main bank. Treat each as its own bank account in HelloBooks and upload its statement too, so transfers between accounts are matched rather than counted twice as income and expense.

Why the bank comes first

It also protects the VAT return. A missed bank line is usually a missed sale or purchase, and either one changes the VAT3.

Almost every transaction an Irish small business makes touches the bank. When the bank is complete and reconciled, sales and purchases are complete, the VAT3 can be trusted and the accountant’s questions shrink. A weekly upload habit is the single most useful bookkeeping routine you can build while direct connections roll out.

Security

Direct connections through Plaid use access you grant at your bank and can withdraw there at any time. Within HelloBooks, roles decide which users can see bank data and which can confirm or change the coding, so an assistant can upload statements without being able to approve them.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I connect AIB to HelloBooks directly?
AIB is among the Irish banks covered by Plaid, but direct connections in Ireland are still rolling out. Upload AIB statements in the meantime.
Which file formats can I upload?
PDF and CSV statements from online banking. CSV gives the cleanest result when your bank offers it.
Will uploaded and connected transactions duplicate?
When a direct connection starts, set its start date after the last uploaded statement so the two sources do not overlap.
Does HelloBooks reconcile automatically?
It proposes matches and coding, and a person confirms them. Nothing is posted to the ledger without that confirmation.
What if my bank only offers PDF statements?
PDF works. HelloBooks reads the lines from the statement; check that the opening and closing balances agree with the bank before confirming the month.
