Referral request emails for accountants

The best time to ask for a referral is right after you have done something the client noticed. A short, specific email at that moment works better than a referral programme announcement.

When to ask

Ask after a visible win: a filed return, a resolved notice, a clean set of books for a loan application. Do not ask in the middle of a document chase.

  • After filing confirmation
  • After a notice is resolved
  • After a planning meeting that found something useful

Keep it honest

A referral request promotes your services, so CAN-SPAM treats it as commercial: physical address, opt-out and an honest subject. Circular 230 §10.30 also applies to private solicitations, so avoid claims about outcomes you cannot support.

Give referrers something to share

A link to a useful page travels further than “we are taking new clients”. Our tax return changes tracker and these guides are written to be shared.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I offer a reward for referrals?
Check your state board’s rules and the AICPA Code if you are a member before offering commissions or referral fees. This page does not cover those rules.
How often should I ask?
Once or twice a year per client, tied to a real moment. More often turns a favour into a campaign.
