The 2026 dates

Publication 509 gives the 2026 federal dates for individuals: April 15, 2026, June 15, 2026, September 15, 2026 and January 15, 2027. Calendar-year corporations had their fourth 2026 payment due December 15, 2026.

Who should get the email

The IRS says individuals, including sole proprietors, partners and S corporation shareholders, generally must make estimated payments if they expect to owe $1,000 or more when they file, and corporations if they expect to owe $500 or more.

Most taxpayers avoid the underpayment penalty if they paid at least 90% of the current year’s tax or 100% of the prior year’s tax, whichever is smaller, according to the IRS estimated taxes page. Check the full rules for higher-income clients before setting a target.

Pick clients from their books

Clients with uneven income are the ones who miss estimates. When their books are in HelloBooks, year-to-date profit is a report away, so the suggested amount in each reminder can reflect this quarter rather than last April’s projection.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can clients pay online?
Yes. The IRS lists paying online, by phone or through the IRS app, including through an individual online account, alongside mailing a payment with Form 1040-ES.
Should the reminder include an amount?
If you have prepared a plan, yes. Otherwise point the client to their worksheet and offer a quick projection.
