Document checklist for partnerships

A partnership return reports the business’s results and then allocates them to each partner. Collect the partner-level information at the same time as the books, or the K-1s will hold up the whole return.

What the return does

The IRS describes Form 1065 as the information return partnerships file to report their income, gains, losses, deductions and credits. The partnership files a copy of each Schedule K-1 with the IRS, and the K-1 reports the partner’s share.

In calendar 2026, partnership returns were due March 16, per Publication 509.

Partner-level items

Allocations follow the partnership agreement, so ask for the current agreement and any amendments every year. Then collect each partner’s contributions, distributions and guaranteed payments, and any change in ownership during the year.

Partner activity in the ledger

Set up separate equity accounts per partner in HelloBooks for contributions and draws. At year end, capital activity per partner is a report, not a reconstruction from bank statements.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What if a partner joined mid-year?
Collect the date and terms of the change and the agreement amendment. Allocations depend on them.
Do partners need anything from us early?
Partners need their K-1s to file their own returns, so a late partnership return delays every partner.
