Car loan interest: what to collect

The loan

  • Loan agreement showing origination date
  • Lender’s interest statement for the year
  • Confirmation the loan is secured by the vehicle

The vehicle

  • VIN (goes on the return)
  • Vehicle information label showing final assembly
  • Gross vehicle weight rating
  • Confirmation it was new, with original use by the client

Use

  • Confirmation of personal, not business, use

Phase-out starts Over $100,000 ($200,000 joint) of modified AGI.

The qualifying conditions

IRS FS-2025-03 says the loan must be originated after December 31, 2024, the vehicle’s original use must start with the taxpayer, and it must be a personal-use vehicle. Used vehicles do not qualify.

Qualifying vehicles include a car, minivan, van, SUV, pick-up truck or motorcycle with a gross vehicle weight rating under 14,000 pounds, with final assembly in the United States.

The VIN and final assembly

The taxpayer must include the vehicle identification number on the return for each year the deduction is claimed. The IRS says the final assembly location is on the vehicle information label, and taxpayers may rely on the plant of manufacture reported in the VIN.

Lender statements

The IRS says lenders receiving qualified interest must file information returns. Ask clients for the lender’s year-end statement and check it against the loan agreement date.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does a lease qualify?
No. Leases do not qualify for the car loan interest deduction.
What if the client uses the car partly for business?
The deduction is for a personal-use vehicle. Business use belongs on the business return under the normal rules, so collect a mileage log and discuss it.
